History

People began thinking about gene therepy in the 1960s and 1970s.
Throdore Friedmann and Richard Roblin published a paper in 1972 called "Gene therapy for human genetic disease?"
French Anderson and Michael Blease work to demonstrate the cell from the cell from other people with Adenosin Deaminase deficiency would be modified in tissues culture in 1985.
Anderson and Blease tried to transfer correct genes into bones marrow of animals in 1986.
In 1988 that when they to tried transfer them to white blood cells would be more successful.
(we learned about the white blood cell in class or also known as leukocytes.)
Anderson and Blease teamed up with Dr. Steven Rosenberg in 1989 to test if it was safe and if the gene therapy could be effective in cancer patients.
In 1990 a little girl with adenosin deaminase deficiency that affects the immunity and the ablity to fight infection was the first patient to be help with gene therapy she was four years old.
Along with the four year old there was a nine year old and a newborn infant that was treated.
In what year did the first Gene Therapy trials take place?

First successful gene therapy trial in 1990.
•4 year old Ashanti DeSiva
•ADA-SCID is a serious disease that usually shows up early in life were the bodies immune system cannot fight off even the weakest of infections.
•Showed real improvement
•No longer needed to be in isolated environment; was allowed to attend school
Similar trial took place in 2000
•10 young children with severe combined immunodeficiency disease (SCID), a disorder in which the patient lacks a functional immune system were treated.
•9 out of the 10 patient showed significant improvement.
•However, 3 of the patients developed leukemia, resulting in one death.
